Anchorage Assembly Updates cottage Food Code to Support Local Vendors

On November 14, the Anchorage Assembly updated the Anchorage cottage Food Code to better support local vendors. Producers of homemade food products sold in Alaska are now exempt from the requirements for permits and inspections, and there is no longer a sales limit, which was previously set at $25,000 annually under cottage food regulations. These changes reflect a commitment to aligning municipal regulations with state laws that foster business opportunities for small-scale homemade food producers.

Overview of the Changes

The amendment eliminates the need for a municipal cottage food license and raw shell egg vending permit, aligning with Alaska's House Bill 251. This state legislation, enacted in 2024, offers minimal regulatory requirements for homemade food that meets specific statutory conditions. Qualifying foods are exempt from state permitting, licensing, and routine inspection, while still requiring clear labeling to inform consumers of any potential allergens.

How This Helps Local Vendors

  1. Simplified Process: By removing redundant municipal permits that were not required by the state, the Anchorage Assembly reduces both bureaucratic red tape and costs for vendors.

  2. Expanded Selling Options: Vendors can now sell a broader array of homemade foods directly to consumers at venues like farmers markets, roadside stands, and community events without the previous restrictions.

  3. Clear Guidelines and Compliance: The amendments provide clear pathways and guidelines for vendors, including labeling requirements and places where homemade foods can be sold.

These updates are a significant step forward in encouraging local food entrepreneurship, making it easier for vendors to showcase their products and contribute to Anchorage's economy and community vitality. We look forward to seeing new vendors thrive under these more flexible and supportive regulations!
